4-H Music & Drama Festival

Columbia County 4-H Music & Drama Festival – April 4, 2020

The Columbia County 4-H Music and Drama Festival is scheduled annually, in late winter or early spring. It is held in the morning at the Portage Center for the Arts in Portage. 4-H club as well as small group and individual options are available for 4-H music and drama performers. In addition to the club presentations, individuals may enter in either individual OR small group categories. Since individual and small group entries are not evaluated, they will perform when the judge is meeting with a club music or drama group.

NOTE: When making music and drama selections, group directors, small groups and individuals are advised to take into consideration the age of the 4-H members and siblings participating and viewing the performances and whether the material is appropriate for a youth audience. Also, ALL groups and/or individuals may self-apply to participate at the Wisconsin State Fair EXPO Program as part of the Performance category. A brief description of each category follows:

 

Columbia County 4-H Club Music and Drama Presentations

4-H Club Music Performances

Music (instrumental, vocal, and/or dance) is worked around a central theme. Clubs are evaluated on team work, enthusiasm, quality, suitability of material and theme, expression, sequence and pace, costuming and props. Each group is allowed a maximum of 30 minutes onstage which includes setup and take down. The recommended performance time is 10 minutes. Participants must be 4-H club members, with the exception of the accompanist. Each club will be critiqued face-to-face following their presentation. Awards will be presented to all participants. 4-H Club Drama Performances

The play chosen should be suitable for a stage and could include props and staging. The time limit will be 35 minutes, including setup and take down. Minimum performance time is 15 minutes. Each club will be critiqued face-to-face following their presentation. Awards will be presented to all participants. All groups may apply to perform at the Wisconsin State Fair. Identity, Persona, Story, Narrative, Drama, Self, Ego

4-H Club Younger Member Drama/Skit Presentation 

4-H clubs may enter a younger member play/skit, which includes 4-H Cloverbud project members. There would be no minimum time, but they should not exceed 20 minutes in length. The group would be evaluated face-to-face. Awards will be presented to all participants. All groups may apply to perform at the Wisconsin State Fair. Small Group Music PerformancesPiano, Instrument, Music, Keys, Notes

Music (instrumental, vocal and/or dance) is worked around a central theme. Small music groups may include 4-H parents or 4-H leaders as well as non-4-H members; however, the number of these other participants cannot exceed the number of 4-H members in the small group. Stage time should be 10 minutes or less, including setup and takedown time. Small group performances will not be evaluated; however, they may apply to perform at the Wisconsin State Fair. Small Group Drama Performances

Small group drama performances could include a skit, puppet show, choral reading or storytelling. It would involve two or more individuals. In addition to 4-H members, parents/leaders or non-4-H members may be included in the group; the number of non-4-H members cannot exceed the number of 4-H members. Performance time should be 5 – 15 minutes. Small group performances will not be evaluated; however, they may apply to perform at the Wisconsin State Fair. Individual Music Performances

Music (instrumental, vocal or dance) is presented by a 4-H club member. The time will be 5 minutes or less. Individuals will not be evaluated; however, they may apply to perform at the Wisconsin State Fair. (See details below about Wisconsin State Fair Youth EXPO Performances.)

 

Individual Drama Performances

A skit, puppet show, reading or storytelling is presented by a 4-H club member. The time should be 10 minutes or less. Individuals will not be evaluated; however, they may apply to perform at the Wisconsin State Fair. (See details below about Wisconsin State Fair Youth EXPO Performances.)

 

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE FOR COLUMBIA COUNTY MUSIC AND DRAMA FEST:

All 4-H clubs, groups or individuals wishing to participate in the Music Festival should complete a registration form. They are found online at:  http://columbia.uwex.edu/4-h-events/4-h-eventregistrations/ An individual, may register to participate in all three categories. Registration due date is two weeks prior to the event. Everyone is encouraged to attend the 4-H Music Festival and enjoy the wonderful entertainment, whether or not your 4-H club is performing.

Wisconsin State Fair — Youth EXPO Performances

Any size group is welcome. Counties no longer nominate a group or alternates; groups self-apply. There is no limit to the number of groups which can apply from a particular county. Any Music and Drama performances (individuals or groups) must submit an audition video posted to YouTube as part of the application process. There is an online link which is to be determined annually and will be shared performers when available each year. Applications must be submitted no later than May 31st. (Note: Wisconsin State Fair Youth EXPO Performance Groups have ONLY 20 minutes on stage which includes setup and takedown time.   It is recommended performances last about 10 minutes at the Wisconsin State Fair.)
